Studies reasons for the neglect of the Book of Momron as significant American literature, and the possibility of changing this. Literary study has been dominated by aesthetic considerations and thus has ruled out the Book of Mormon for its 'superficial peculiarities and literary awkwardness.' A new recognition of its relevance to the concerns of American life in the early 19th century could change all that. Discusses the steps necessary: establishment of the text by the best critical methods, and a literary study and analysis employing the concept of myth as now widely used in literary criticism and especially of religious texts where a literal approach raises nearly insuperable obstacles.
