This chapter examines the health guidelines in the Word of Wisdom through the lens of general medical practices during the early nineteenth century. Many medical professionals were encouraging similar health practices, though their recommendations were at that time not based in scientific evidence. Modernly, the most obvious benefits to observing the Word of Wisdom are reduced cancer and heart disease-- benefits that were irrelevant because of the nineteenth-century life expectancy.
