"In 1847 by reorganizing a First Presidency and claiming for himself the role of prophet and president of the church, I argue that Brigham Young took on the role, in monarchical terms, of a “usurper.” Thereafter he faced some of the same insecurities shared by historic monarchs who seized rather than inherited their thrones... The succession process in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has caused the prophetic monarchy to evolve into something more akin to a corporate oligarchy, whose successive aged leaders have little energy or time to make significant changes during their administration."
