"In recent decades, the historical narrative about the end of the Relief Society in Nauvoo has lost meaningful nuance around the events of 1844 and has focused on Young’s words on March 9, 1845. However, after Young spoke out against the Relief Society in these all-male meetings, he did not communicate a disbandment to the women of the Relief Society or advertise his words, despite both opportunity and precedent. As such, he likely meant to signal his opposition to Emma’s leadership to the men present. The Shadow Succession Crisis can help identify areas in the post-martyrdom narratives where women have been left in the shadows of powerful men despite their engagement with ecclesiastical, priestly, and social authority. For some Relief Society women, this meant breaking from Emma’s leadership to support Young and the Twelve. The words of male leaders like Young matter, but our histories must consider women’s agency and engage the complexities of both interpersonal human relationships and institutional-follower relationships."
