This article approaches the question of whether Joseph Smith cohabited with women, which he had been sealed to, who were simultaneously married to another man by looking for reactions from others who knew of the sealing. As the author puts it, "...if Joseph Smith had introduced a ceremony that resulted in a woman having simultaneous husbands, it would have been highly controversial. The historical record shows that dozens of polygamy insiders were aware of and that Smith had been publicly accused of marrying spiritual wives who were already legally wed. Despite these observations, no antagonists complained at that time, and no church members, then or afterward, defended the practice."
