"In order to properly evaluate the Hebrew elements within the Book of Abraham, the first two sections of this chapter will consider the context, chronology, and relationships among Joseph Smith's work with the Egyptian papyri, his study of the Hebrew language, and his production of the Abraham text. This survey of evidence will demonstrate that from an early stage Smith's Egyptian project and Hebrew studies appear to have been intentionally intertwined, as he evidently believed that a knowledge of Hebrew would assist his decipherment of the Egyptian characters and thus facilitate his translation of the Book of Abraham. This survey will also show that while Smith's translation of the Book of Abraham began in the summer of 1835 (before his study of Hebrew in the winter of 1835-1836) it was not completed until the spring of 1842 (several years after his formal study of Hebrew), with the presence of Seixas-inspired Hebrew elements helping to clarify the chronology of the book's textual development. The third section of this chapter will analyze the Hebrew words, concepts, and other influences in the text of the Book of Abraham, including the ways in which Smith's Hebrew studies, grammar books, and lexicons informed his translation process. The chapter will conclude by considering the implications of this evidence for Joseph Smith's views and mechanics of scriptural translation (which included a dynamic blend of academic and prophetic activity), as well as the impact this process had on the development of Smith's most innovative theological teachings."
