"Some of the analysis that follows considers the Book of Mormon from a traditional Mormon perspective as a translation of a previously existing narrative written and edited by historical individuals. It is possible to read the book as a work of myth, or as religious fiction written by Joseph Smith, or even as fiction written by God and revealed to Joseph Smith-- all of which may be hypotheses worth exploring-- but in trying to understand the implications of reading the book as a translation, at least from the view of those who have been converted by it, it has to be imagined as an extensive, multigenerational production of ancient record keepers writing in a distant language and culture. From this perspective the question may be posed again, in a slightly different way: What does the Book of Mormon do that the Doctrine and Covenants cannot? Potential answers may be organized into at least four categories: internal perspectives, historical implications, literary considerations, and biblical comparisons." [Abstract from chapter]
