"This chapter traces the origins of Mormonism out of the notion of metaphysical translation keyed to Hebrews 11, a chapter that historian Grant Underwood notes was one of the two most frequently cited New Testament passages in Mormon sermons during the first decade of the movement. This argument first requires a close consideration of definitions, an excursion in lexical history to justify prioritizing metaphysical over linguistic translation, all toward the end of broadly redefining translation in a way that more fully encapsulates Smith's overarching project. Next, under the aegis of this redefinition, the chapter reexamines the Book of Mormon, that particular translation project of foundational importance to understanding Smith and his movement. The 'translation of the Book of Mormon' will be reconceptualized and renarrated as a process governed by the spatial concerns of the early American magical treasure quest." [Abstract from chapter]
