Baugh proposes that the first baptism for the dead performed in the Nauvoo Temple baptismal font were performed privately after a small dedication ceremony by Joseph Smith. The small number of people gathered for this event, which was recorded by William Clayton, led to incorrect claims that a larger and more public baptismal service occuring about two weeks later was the first baptismal service in the temple font. William Clayton's record and a personal letter show that Reuben McBride was the first person baptised in the font on November 8, 1841.
