"The Winter Quarters accounts of the Battle of Nauvoo and related records organized by the Church History Library under MS 14282 tell the story of the battle from a first-hand, Latter-day Saint perspective. These accounts correct prior descriptions of the Battle of Nauvoo as a mere skirmish, and they illuminate in depth and detail not previously available, the actual course of the hotly contested battle. Indeed, they document unrelenting cannonading and gunfire on the last two days of the battle; a near breakthrough by anti-Mormon forces past the battle line into the heart of Nauvoo on Friday, September 11; and the fiercest of battles on Saturday, September 12, where the fate of Nauvoo literally hung in the balance. They also provide new information about the Spartan Band, Captain Repsher's command, and the deaths of Captain William Anderson, his son Augustus, and David Norris. And importantly, historians and others now have a rich resource in the Church History Library's collection of Battle of Nauvoo records." [Author]
