This article discusses the divide between members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and nonmembers in Utah in the time leading up to statehood, and it examines reasons some had for voting against statehood, especially nonmembers' fear of the Church gaining more power and the nonmembers no longer having any political influence.
