"As an ancient text, the Book of Mormon stands firmly in the ancient Israelite tradition. Thus, a major aim of many of the essays in this book is to identify onomastic wordplay in the Book of Mormon -- to the degree that it can be confidently identified -- using a knowledge of the languages that the Nephite record-keepers said they used. It becomes evident in the course of these essays that Book of Mormon writers not only understood the meaning of the names in their onomasticon, but abundantly employed wordplay -- including thematic wordplay revolving around particular names -- for rhetorical and narratological effect. These essays will further address additional onomastic topics and issues in Latter-day Saint scripture, including the etiological narratives that explain Jerusalem as the eventual site of the temple, the 'rock' dialogue of Matthew 16:16, and onomastic rhetorical overflow of Paul's letter to Philemon. The temple relevance of the names such as Jacob, Israel, Enos, Peter, Jehovah-jireh, will also emerge." [Author]
