“This paper… seeks to fill in the gaps concerning what will be referred to as the ‘John Taylor Authorship Tradition’ (JTAT), which is the idea that Taylor was [Doctrine and Covenants] section 135’s sole author. This will be done by tracing a fuller picture of how the tradition started and how it developed beyond the statements of Grant, Sjodahl, and Doxey. This study will first briefly discuss the original text of section 135 followed by an assessment of what Taylor himself said concerning the martyrdom in his lifetime. Then the JTAT will be traced by assessing every known instance of a Church leader, author, or Church publication stating that Taylor was 135’s sole author. These attributions will generally be considered chronologically, though some attention will be paid to the role (Church leader, author, scholar, etc.) of the individual contributors. By better understanding the origins and perpetuation of the JTAT, we will be able to approach questions of section 135’s authorship with more clarity and historical backing.” [Author]
