“This article traces the history of Utah’s Pioneer Day from its beginnings in 1849 to the present day. It focuses broadly on the cultural and religious customs and rhetoric surrounding the day. Each chronological section begins with a brief description of one celebration that was especially noteworthy or significant; the rest of the section describes patterns and themes associated with the holiday in the ensuing years. Of course, reality does not fit so neatly in these arbitrary designations; themes and observances that are popular during one era often began in or continued into other eras. The article relies heavily on newspaper accounts, which provide many details about the public observances of the holiday.” [Author]
