“In the following, I attempt to survey two things at once, before providing a theological assessment from my own perspective. I aim first to outline the presentation of gender in Latter-day Saint scripture, reviewing less flattering and less comfortable aspects of scripture along with aspects that lend themselves to a redemptive hermeneutic. Second, along the way, I mean to give a general impression of the current state of the field of gendered hermeneutics concerning Latter-day Saint scripture, focusing on work undertaken in the context of America’s so-called second and third waves of feminism. Because the literature on gender in Latter-day Saint scripture—both conservative and liberal—focuses almost exclusively on women, I similarly narrow my focus here. In my concluding reflections, however, I not only sketch a theological proposal regarding scripture and gender, I gesture toward particularly underdeveloped models for gender-critical study in the context of Latter-day Saint scripture studies.” [Author]
