"It is almost impossible to talk about women within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a monolith and futile to think it can be done without somehow eliding various subjectivities for the comfort of classification. A unified definition of any group is difficult, particularly when they span the globe and include multiple races, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, and sexual orientations. An additional challenge in defining a group of women is that within the fields of women’s and gender studies the term 'femininities' is contested as it has not been as thoroughly interrogated and deconstructed as the binary term 'masculinities' has been. Despite the limitations of the term, and the challenges inherent in describing LDS women as a stable, unified cohort, this essay tentatively employs the category of 'femininities' in order to examine the institutional ideal of a feminine subject and the competing reality of various Latter-day Saint female subjectivities. Using an intersectional approach that attends to agentive adaptations within networks of power, this essay observes the disconnect between the ideal feminine subject developed within hegemonic American masculinity and the lived practices of Latter-day Saint female subjects that span the globe. Relying upon ethnographic research in multiple countries this essay offers an alternate notion of multiple LDS femininities with just two connected threads: a belief of being a daughter of God coupled with a deep commitment to family."
