This article examines the social and cultural impact of 19th-century portrayals of Latter-day Saints in popular media, particularly the plays The Mormons and Danites in the Sierras.
"English’s The Mormons and Miller’s Danites in the Sierras demonstrate how social commentary, communicated via forms of artistic expression, can contribute to the 'othering' of marginalized groups. Review of Brigham Young’s choice to build and manage a theater exemplifies his own controversial leadership style and justifies Latter-day Saints’ participation in theater. In both New York and Utah Territory, thespian portrayals of current events reflected prevailing social perceptions of Mormonism and helped shape popular culture." [Author] -
