"This essay will, first, review the land acquisition policies within the public domain of the United States in the early 1800s. Second, this composition will also review the creation of Jackson County, the designation of Independence as the county seat, and the importance of those factors relative to the land situation in Jackson County prior to and throughout the year 1831. Third, this piece will detail the arrival of the Church of Christ, led by young Joseph Smith, at Independence during the summer of 1831 and the designation of the specific 'spot' for the Millennial Temple. Fourth, I will argue why I believe that an arranged meeting between Independence local tradesman and 'squatter' Jones H. Flournoy and Joseph Smith (and probably Edward Partridge) occurred prior to the dedication of the Millennial Temple site. Fifth, I will attempt to correct or clarify some historians’ interpretation of the events dealing with the dedication of and the eventual purchase of the Temple Lot Property. Sixth, we will discuss the subsequent acquisition of the Temple Lot Property in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, in December 1831, several months after the Joseph Smith visit and dedication event in summer of 1831. Finally, I will briefly mention some of the misinformation or misinterpretation of the events surrounding the permission to access the proposed dedication site for the Millennial Temple and the subsequent acquisition of the Temple Lot Property in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri."
