"On April 6, 1916, Harry Edgar Baker dictated the first of two apocalyptic 'messages,' which he titled collectively The Word of the Lord to His church in the wilderness: and to all the nations of the Gentiles... [H]is booklets... were written in the voice of God, who had a warning for a modern world that had rejected the prophets, oppressed the poor, and initiated 'the greatest of all the wars of history.' The messages detailed society's sins, lambasted Christianity's theological errors, and promised the imminent apocalypse culminating at the return of Christ... What sets The Word of the Lord apart from typical Latter Day Saint prophecy literature is its emphasis on the errors of the LDS Church and the calling of a prophet outside of the standard church hierarchy. In addition to examining the content of The Word of the Lord, we argue here that while the messages never led to the formation of a new community, as was usually the goal for similar prophetic works, they have been adopted by individuals and small groups within Mormon Fundamentalism. These disenfranchised Mormons were and continue to be attracted to the messages' condemnation of the LDS Church and their corresponding promises of a renewal of the tradition." [Author]
