"In this chapter, I argue that Lucy-- Mother of the Prophet-- and those who helped midwife the account into existence continued the work of ancient prophets: they created a new sacred history of a modern prophet and his family. Doing so cemented her place as the Mother of the Church and a Mother in Israel. These titles were not just honorific; they played related but distinctive roles in Smith's vision of her own mission. Never seen as canonically binding, Lucy Mack Smith's history gained unofficial authority through wide acknowledgement and repeated use. First published in 1853 with at least ten different major editions since then, the public life of Lucy Mack Smith's history continues. Lucy's narrative, arguably the most often-read Mormon woman's writing, remains a consistent source shaping the narrative of early church history. Claudia Bushman even argued for its inclusion in the LDS canon, alongside a number of other women's writings. Here, I examine Smith's role and intention in crafting what in practice became informal scripture." [Author]
