"In this study the biographical approach has been avoided as far as possible. The chief purposes of the work are to portray the hardships and accomplishments of the female pioneers in the trans-Alleghany region, and to mention somewhat more sketchily the important effects of the westward movement upon the lives of women in the older sections of the nation. Moreover, the study is confined to women of European descent. Hence women of American Indian tribes, and those of Oriental ancestry are not included. Nor does it attempt to estimate the services of ladies who were affiliated with religious orders or missionary societies which attempted to be of service in the West. The writer believes that all such considerations represent separate studies." [Author]
