"In many ways, [B. H.] Roberts mirrored a typical LDS man of his day. He wed and lived monogamously before eventually marrying two more wives. But polygamy for Roberts came at a time when the practice found itself under attack, and he was jailed for five months. His rise to the First Council of Seventy in 1888 came less than a decade after his earliest missionary service to the Midwest and Southern States... Roberts often found himself at the center of controversy, both at the national and state levels... His interest in politics led to active participation in the Democratic Party, not only in supporting others in their run for office, but in twice becoming a candidate himself. His election to the US House of Representatives in 1898 was a major feat, but it proved a disappointment when plural marriage cost him his seat before he could begin serving. Although Roberts's life in politics and church leadership form a major part of his legacy, modern church members remember him best for his writings... Roberts's work, though not without limitations nor undeserving of criticism, is nevertheless still read and cited today, which says something about the man and why he remains intriguing after all these years."
