This book chapter is a reprint of "The Idea of the Temple in History," originally published in the Millenial Star. It discusses the importance and understanding of the temple in the early Christian church, such as their borrowing of Jewish and Gentile rites, view of the Holy Sepulchre, and conflation of churches with temples. It also describes the Temple at Jerusalem and the rites of the Temple. Finally, it discusses the Salt Lake temple and how the rites done in Latter-day Saint temples exemplify the Temple idea.
