This article gives a historical overview of the response of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to the question of Joseph Smith's involvement in polygamy. It shows the diverging opinions and statements by Church leaders in reponse to this question from the days of Joseph Smith III's leadership to the present. Plural marriage itself is a highly divisive doctrine across Latter-day Saint denominations, and accepting or denying Joseph Smith's involvement has proven similarly divisive for RLDS members. The author suggests that acceptance of the historical facts is inevitable and will broaden the perspective and historical development of the Church.
