This article examines the beliefs of Latter-day Saints concerning Jesus's suffering in the garden of Gethsemane and on the cross at Calvary by considering lyrics in the 1835, 1840, 1841, and 1985 editions of the hymn book. Studies have found that Latter-day Saints generally consider the majority of Jesus's suffering to have taken place in Gethsemane, with Calvary playing a less-prominent role. This article finds that hymn lyrics do not mirror current popular perceptions, putting a much stronger emphasis on the cross than the garden. Only 6 hymns referred to Gethsemane, while 156 referred to the Crucifixion.
