"Among the distinguishing features of the first half of the Gospel of John, the so-called 'Book of Signs' (John 1:19-12:50), are seven discourses that Jesus delivers, either as dialogues with individuals or as public speeches to groups. They are, in order: The New Birth (3:1-36), The Water of Life (4:1-42), The Divine Son (5:17-47), The Bread of Life (6:35-38), The Life-Giving Spirit (7:16-52), The Light of the World (8:12-59), and The Good Shepherd (10:1-18). Like the seven signs (semeia), selected miracles that John uses to illustrate not just what Jesus can do but who, in fact, he is, the seven discourses reflect the extraordinarily high christology of John. The Johannine discourses are significant for discussions of christology because they are placed in the mouth of Jesus himself. Unlike in the Synoptic Gospels (of Matthew, Mark, and Luke), where Jesus is rarely forthright about his identity during much of his ministry, leading to the so-called 'Messianic secret' in the Gospel of Mark, in John-- as in the Doctrine and Covenants and select passages of the Book of Mormon-- Jesus himself discusses his identity, his relationship to the Father, and his mission."
