"This essay considers the Isaianic phrase 'without money and without price' both in light of contemporary academic discourse and scriptural passages related to the use of this phrase. To keep the scope of this essay manageably narrow, I will focus on the concept of equality as addressed in the relevant scriptural selections. My aim is not to translate the scriptures into the language of academic discourse, but rather to use the scriptures to interrogate academic discourse. I say 'interrogate' here rather than 'criticize' because the latter is likely to conjure an idea of scriptural meaning wholly external to academic discourse-- an idea that would further entrench the heart/mind dichotomy mentioned above. Put differently, then, my aim is to use the resources of academic discourse to help incarnate an intellectually rigorous interpretation of scripture that is at once true to scripture and cognizant of the intellectual screen on which the meaning of scripture is necessarily projected."
