"From 1837-1852, the growth of Latter Day Saintism in the British Isles was phenomenal. British social historian W.H.G. Armytage called it 'the most spectacular harvest of souls since Wesley's time.' Then growth collapsed in the 1850s. In this paper, it is argued that growth came through preaching a version of the Kirtland Gospel with both authentic spiritual experience and the hope of Zion as place and process, with economic justice for the poor. Rapid decline in British Isles membership was caused most of all by polygamy. It was publicly announced, without apology, through the church's own newspaper, the Millennial Star, in January 1853. Victorians were uptight about sex anyway. Polygamy was the worst of scandals for a religious movement, and this shadow continues today. Given this history, the question is asked, 'How might trust be intentionally rebuilt to facilitate mission today?'" [Author]
