"...Recent scholarship enables a reconstructed textual chronology with Joseph engaged and in charge. Ironically, this textual chronology has largely been constructed within and subsumed by apologist wars over the Book of Abraham. But set to a different task, such a chronology makes it possible to track accumulating and transforming characters and narrative, made piece by textual piece, within the arcane thicket of the Egyptian project during the summer of 1835. Against this horizon for Joseph's translations and investigations, a starring female character is a wondrous gift for interpretation. Joseph makes Queen Kahtoumun the vehicle for a startling range of explorations that summer: a lineage linking the pure language of Adam with Egyptian, a definition of any or all women, and finally a dangerous sexual landscape. It is worth pausing to recuperate her story." [Author]
