"Book of Mormon peoples had their origin in what we call today 'Bible Lands.' It is altogether fitting, therefore, that one whose special training has been in the field of Old Testament studies should write a book on the Nephite scriptures. I have written this volume for the purpose of making it possible for Latter-day Saints to gain a better acquaintance with their Book of Mormon. It is especially designed to bring the reader in close contact with the record itself. For that reason, little is said about the historical details surrounding its coming forth. These have already been set forth by others. I have given considerable attention to the analysis of the Book of Mormon as a whole and to its constituent records. Moreover, greater heed has been paid to the literary forms in this scripture than has been done heretofore. It is hoped that the discussions of the major literary problems of the Book of Mormon will prove helpful to many persons." [Author]
