"This article argues that in order to protect the Latter-day Saints from hostile opposition, Joseph Smith and other church leaders intentionally crafted Nauvoo’s city charter to incorporate expansive legal powers. It will demonstrate that in his capacity as mayor and judge, Smith misunderstood and misapplied key elements of the law. Finally, the article will explain that Smith’s perceived abuse of the legal system was the most immediate catalyst for his assassination and the principal justification given by those most responsible for the act."
