"Ranching is a part of the history of public lands in the West. In recent years, there has been increasing pressure to protect public lands through the establishment of protective designations, such as Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs). These designations are changing the rules and regulations for managing public lands and threatening the existence of ranchers who use these public lands. Unfortunately, there is very little information available which identifies the impacts of protective designations on the ranching community. The purpose of this research is to identify these impacts, determine their severity, and suggest management changes which will protect the land and the lifestyle and livelihood of ranchers. The information gleaned from in this study illustrates that through adjustments in management, it is possible to maintain healthy public lands without doing away with ranching. [Author's Abstract]
