"The 1890, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (Mormon) Prophet Wilford Woodruff published what was to become known as the Manifesto. This declaration officially ended the church's involvement in the practice of polygamy. By so doing, the Latter-day Saint Church was able to resolve many of its political differences with the federal government. Continuing its submissive compliance, the Mormon Church also disbanded its People's Party, and as a result Utah gained its statehood in 1896. Just two years later, the Spanish-American War was declared, and Utah's citizens were overwhelmingly supportive of it. Through all of this one central question arises: Why were Utahans so patriotic during the war? It is this thesis of this study that the Spanish-American War played a significant role in reconciling the predominantly Mormon-run state with the United States of America. Although previous scholars have demonstrated that Utah's entrance into the Union was predicated upon the Mormon Church's issuance of its Manifesto ending polygamy, few have looked at the Spanish-American War as a major factor in Utah's so-called Americanization. Moreover, this work also provides evidence of how the war served as a catalyst for Utah's citizens to transcend their local ties to the community, to the Church, and state in order to gain for the first time in their history a national perspective."
