The author states that, "What follows is an economic history of the Navajos living in southeastern Utah during the twentieth century. But it is more than that: it is a glimpse into the past, informed when possible by a Navajo cultural perspective derived from oral history." He further explains that the book is a history of the Navajos and how they, their culture, and their economy changed. He believes the purpose of the book is to further attempt to join the view of the social scientist with that of the Navajo.
