"In 1869, having heard rumors of gold and silver strikes in the tintic Mountains of Utah Territory, Latter-day Saint immigrant John Beck decided to try his luck at prospecting. In the years following the settlement of the Great Basin of the American West by members of the Church, President Brigham Young emphasized to his followers that agriculture was important and that the various trades were admirable vocations to pursue. Mining, however, was a different matter. President Young's pronouncements against seeking after mineral wealth were a major deterrent for most, but not all, members of the Church over which he presided. Certainly, Beck was not the first nor the last Church member to look for gold and silver in the mountains of Utah. His incredible tale of the fabulous mine he discovered is also a story of financial greed and dissension, as well as sheer dedication to an admirable religious cause. Beck's humble desire for a large portion of the stock in this venture to be consecrated for the redemption of Zion is fascinating." [Author]
