In this article, Wysong corrects Rufus Wood Leigh, who proposed that the Rio Verde, Rio Severo, and Rio de la Virgin Utah rivers had Spanish origins in his published article in 1961. He explains that there is no documented proof of this claim and discusses how Severo and Virgin are words that have origins elsewhere. Wysong examines the origins of the current names for the rivers and emphasizes the complex nature of toponymy.
