This article discusses the 1900 Winter Quarters coal mining disaster through the eyes of the Finnish community. It explains why so many Finns had migrated from Finland to Utah at the time, gives examples of their personal experiences with the mining accident, and defines the cultural trait sisu-- fortitude, courage, and inner strength-- that was abundantly manifested by the survivors and their families.
