This article examines Orson Hyde's missionary tract "Ein Ruf aus der Wüste," of which the original English version no longer exists. The author studied the German version as well as the translation back into English and drew conclusions about Hyde's knowledge of and proficiency in the German language. He concludes that Hyde received some help with grammatical aspects of the tract, but preferred to do the majority of the translation of himself in order to preserve the spirit in which it was written.
