"In this article, I explore this dynamic by studying the case of missionary-athletes in pre-World War II Argentina. A careful examination of 1930s U.S.-Argentine political relations, the contemporary discourse of physical culture, and the spiritual dimension of sports in the church and Argentine culture suggests that the mission’s adoption of sports proved successful because Argentines perceived Los Mormones as embodying values and ideals consistent with a modern Argentine cultural identity."
