"What I do here is confront directly the question of whether Mormonism is Christian by examining the situation from a different and fairly complicated angle that calls for looking at the significance and implications of labeling and naming in culture and religion. I consider two possible connections central to the way the Mormonism Christian question is being worked out : (1) the connection between the growth and geographical expansion of the LDS Church and its move from Mormon and Latter-day Saint to Christian definitions of the church and its members; and (2) the connection between the growth and increasing social and political significance of conservative Christianity and its need to have something to define itself over and against, a need that defining Mormonism as not-Christian helps satisfy."
