The Mormon Concept of God : a Philosophical Analysis

"The Mormon concept of God is probably the most unique among American religious sects which claim to be Christian. Most traditional Christians who have written critical appraisals of Mormon theism have done so from a perspective best described as biblical. They have attempted to show why the Mormon concept of God is inconsistent with the concept of God which Christians have traditionally believed is portrayed in the Bible. Although this move has its theological merits, we believe that there are philosophical problems with the Mormon concept of God that have yet to be addressed by Christian philosophers. Furthermore, we know of no biblical critique of the Mormon concept of God that is adequate in showing why the classical view rather than the Mormon concept fits best with the biblical portrait of God. The critiques which do exist nearly always assume that the classical view is the biblical view without defending this position with serious detail and/or rigor. For these reasons, the scope of this book is narrow, yet it ventures into uncharted territory. Our purpose is to show (1) that the Mormon concept of God differs radically from the classical concept of God, (2) that the Mormon concept of God contains many philosophical flaws, and (3) that the classical concept of God is more consistent with the Christian Scriptures than the Mormon view."
