"The Pioneers suffered, without a murmur, all the privations and difficulties in the early settlement of the country; and by their energy, bravery, and sound practical sense, the country we now enjoy, with all the comforts and blessings of civilized life, they reclaimed from a wilderness infested with hostile savages and wild beasts. It is a story of these pioneers, French, British, and Americans, in their discovery and early settlement of Illinois, that I now attempt to narrate. Moreover, I know of no work, of this character, that is confined solely to the discovery and early settlement of Illinois, but the present unpretending one, which is now presented to the public. This was some inducement to the task. I hope my humble performance may please and interest the reader, as it has done the writer." [Author]
