"White Mormon pioneers occupied the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and refused to pay Shoshone inhabitants for the privilege, proclaiming that the land belonged to God and therefore to themselves. From 1847 to 1851 the settlers imposed a colonial system of government and economics that systematically subjugated and dispossessed the native Ute, Shoshone, Goshute, Pahvant, Sanpit, and Southern Paiute peoples of the Wasatch Front and Range. Several historians have suggested that Mormon settlement can be interpreted as a conquest of native peoples, but no detailed narrative history has adopted that frame. This study fills that gap in the literature. Through careful archival research and vivid narrative writing, it teases out a story of Mormon conquest and explores its shape." [Author]
