"The Idaho Test Oath, passed by the territorial legislature in 1885, disfranchised all Latter-day Saints in the territory, prohibiting them from voting, jury service, holding public office, or teaching school. This law was passed after two Mormon legislators lost their seats in a disputed election in which forged telegraphs were sent, purportedly from County Prosecutor Joseph C. Rich and President John Taylor, and forged ballots were used by anti-Mormons to increase their vote totals. While the Saints objected to the tactics used by their opponents, they had no idea that these forgeries would significantly affect their history." [Author]
