"Mormons experience a paradoxical relationship between their faith and the digital age. Historically, a love for, and a tension with, digital technologies has abounded in Mormonism. However, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church have made culture-wrenching efforts to spiritualize electronic scriptures and validate technological devices necessary to employ them. I have proposed that the culmination of this process was the release of the 2013 edition of the LDS scriptures in an electronic format that precluded its printed version. For Mormons, this was the intersection wherein the arc of scriptural text and the arc of technological advancement met. Did Monson, Packer, Perry, Oaks, Bednar, and other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles expand the canon of sacred texts in Mormonism? No, not in the sense that new revelations were added to the 2013 edition of the LDS scriptures, but they played an indispensable role in expanding interpretive tools such as the introduction to Official declarations 2 and the acceptable mediums through which sacral texts could be freely employed in sacred Mormon space. This is a clear example of one way Mormon hierarchy functions-- especially in how it bestows sacral value within the Church. In sum, Mormons have entered a new era wherein electronic scripture enjoys complete legitimacy in private and public venues. The spiritualization of electronic scriptures is a seminal event in the history of sacred texts in Mormonism." [Author]
