This chapter reviews the Pearl of Great Price and examines its two translation texts in order to show "how the Pearl of Great Price has gone beyond canonical borders. From this we can see that the Mormon open-canon approach rests on the initial authority and legitimacy of Joseph Smith, and that the desire for an open canon increases as sacred material becomes more available to members of the LDS Church. However, it can also be seen from this brief analysis that going beyond the canonical borders can be both a divine and human endeavor, which can be risky or even dangerous, and it can sometimes lead to challenges that threaten the sacred legitimacy that has been fostered in the past."
