[2020 Mormon History Association Winner (tie) for Best Book] "In order to explore themes about sexual difference, this book looks at three areas of activity by LDS church officials in the modern period. One primary area of focus is public preaching and teaching, including sermons, manuals, and other literature about racial and gender purity, homosexuality, and marriage. Second, the book explores the history of new institutions and modes of knowledge to address concerns about gender, including homosexuality. Third, the church engaged in various sociopolitical interventions, including opposition to civil rights and the Equal Rights Amendment, and waged regional battles against same-sex marriage, such as California’s Proposition 8. Mormonism, as any religious tradition, draws its ideas about sexuality and sexual difference in part from its own tradition and in part from its cultural context. Further, Mormonism, as any religious tradition, has changed how it evaluates sexuality and gender difference over time. If the past is any indication of the future, Mormonism will continue to adapt to, reject, and accommodate social changes." [Author]
