This article examines Brigham Young's teachings about Adam and the Garden of Eden. "In order to better contextualize and understand precisely what Young was doing by teaching about his garden, I will first review Joseph Smith’s revelation of a new cosmology in Nauvoo. Thus we will be able contrast Young’s teachings with Smith’s and other apostles charged with disseminating Smith’s revelations to the world. Then using the best sources available, I will describe what I call Young’s “garden cosmology,” a primary focus of which was to narrate how biological reproduction was a foundational and inevitable principle of the universe."
