"The malleability of religious identity in the hands of competing cultural forces is plainly evident in the long-sustained interest members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have held for ancient Egypt; an interest that has extended well beyond mere academic curiosity by fundamentally shaping Latter-day Saint religious consciousness. A diachronic look at how Latter-day Saint religious imagination has reacted to Egypt and Egyptian antiquities may prove insightful on this point. This paper, accordingly, will outline the historical Latter-day Saint fascination with ancient Egypt and examine how the history of such—beginning with Joseph Smith in the nineteenth century to the present—may help us better understand the tumultuous fashioning of religious identity."
