This chapter discusses the transformation of the idea of the kingdom of God from a political to a purely ecclesiastical concept. It gives four general causes for this transformation : persecution, the decline of millennialism, the inherent American patriotism of the Saints, and the fact that the Kingdom of God had fulfilled important functions and outlived its usefulness.
